Cutting-Edge Competence

By | News | No Comments

VDO stands for tradition, innovation and visionary developments. The brand, which belongs nowadays to the Continental corporation, has inspired marine instrumentation with its expertise for more than 60 years. VDO won the trust of prestigious boatbuilders decades ago with measuring instruments that were way ahead of their time. The instrument specialist has lived up to this trust and will continue to do so – with new technologies, cutting-edge visions and top quality.

Decades of experience – great innovations

VDO Marine’s instruments were first put into operation on deep sea fishing boats in Scandinavia. They were also used on board US Navy torpedo boats. Since these beginnings, the history of the Continental brand has been one of technological highlights – with a broad range of applications and customized design options. Innovative and user-friendly solutions grew, so did VDO’s customer base. “VDO is committed to making current marine measurement technology that is geared to the future – and symbolic of that is the underwater car sQuba, where developments from the Continental brand are also on board,” said Martin Ebneter, Head of R&D, Marine Powersports Accessories.

The car, a futuristic convertible from the Swiss concept and prototype company Rinspeed, can sustain dives of up to ten meters in depth thanks to the water-tight instrument cluster developed by VDO. “In the James Bond film ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ from 1977, such a car was pure science fiction – we’re all the more proud to have helped turn this vision into reality in 2008 in the shape of a fully functional prototype.”

Intelligent instrumentation for boats of all classes and sizes

The Continental brand now has a broader setup than ever before – yet it has remained true to its roots and mission: The instruments for engine monitoring and navigation still embody certified OEM quality coupled with a flexible design. Thanks to the modular design of its ViewLine range of instrumentation, VDO is able to offer more flexible installation and design options, as well as space-saving combined devices in three housing sizes for motor boats and yachts. With OceanLink, VDO offers the perfect plug and play instrumentation solution for motor boats. VDO recently supplemented its existing lines with AcquaLink. The premium line sets, with TFT Displays, new standards in instrumentation on high-end boats. The AcquaLink Nav Sensor, a multifunctional sensor that processes and calculates the data from the GPS system, compass, temperature, barometric systems and a 3-axis acceleration sensor and uses it to generate extremely precise nautical information, and the AcquaLink Nav Box, a central processing unit and signal interface, are the heart of this new product line.

Individuality for a successful future

With its three product lines AcquaLink, ViewLine and OceanLink, the company offers the ideal solution for all classes and sizes of yacht and motor boat. VDO’s focus is on continuous further development and expansion of these lines. An example of that is GPS Speed, the new component in the ViewLine range of instrumentation. It unites a modern design and OEM quality – and can be tailored to individual needs with the customary ease. Features include a speed warning, time format, time zone and speed unit. VDO intends to significantly expand its extensive portfolio again in the near future. “We’re planning to launch new radar systems and autopilots,” said Martin Ebneter. A further field the company aims to focus more strongly on in future is the Automatic Identification System – a radio system that improves safety in shipping by networking vessels.

Curtis Cargo Bags

New Line Of Cargo Bags

By | News | No Comments

CURT Manufacturing, LLC., the leading manufacturer and marketer of USA-manufactured towing products, has added waterproof cargo bags to its Cargo Management product line.

CURT cargo carriers and roof baskets are designed to maximize vehicle storage area by allowing items to be packed outside the vehicle. Instead of using a tarp and bungees to protect items during travel, CURT cargo bags offer superior protection from rain, dirt, road grime and even wind damage.

Unlike other cargo bags manufactured with low-quality plastic materials, these cargo bags are made from thick UV-resistant vinyl and have welded seams to be truly waterproof. Strong, 1” wide polypropylene straps keep the bag firmly attached to the carrier and ensure belongings will not jostle around. CURT cargo bags also come with a heavy-duty zipper that wraps 1/2 way or 3/4 of the way around the bag, depending on the model. Hook-and-loop flaps keep the zipper completely covered and the inside of the bag totally dry. For extra security, the zippers are able to be joined together and feature large holes to accept a padlock.

CURT cargo bags are available for our cargo carriers and roof-mounted cargo baskets. They come in four different sizes, including 12 1/4 cu. ft., 13 1/2 cu. ft., 15 cu. ft. and 21 cu. ft. All of our cargo bags are easy to fold up for compact storage and come with a one-year warranty.

About CURT Manufacturing: CURT is a leading manufacturer and marketer of premium towing products. 7 Steps To a Safer, Efficient Fleet

By | News | No Comments

Safety and efficiency are vital considerations. You may not consider them to be the glamorous side of your operation but if you’re not safe or efficient then the rest of your business is built on pretty flimsy foundations. When it comes to your fleet these two aspects are even more important. Vehicles that are not safe put your staff and cargo at risk while inefficiency is money down the drain that any business can ill afford. So, how do you ensure your fleet is safer and more efficient? Here’s seven steps to set you on your way…Tyre pressure: The state of your tyres feeds into both the safety and efficiency of your fleet. If the pressure is too low fuel use increases by about 3% while a low tread depth increases stopping distances, reduces grip and increases the risk of aquaplaning. Double the number of checks you perform to eliminate the risk from this. Regular servicing of all of your fleet is important but keep a really close eye on those tyres.Cut the blind spot: Blind spots are dangerous. By their very nature these are areas where you simply cannot see what may be around your vehicle – a problem magnified when it comes to larger vehicles – and poses a problem with sideswiping on motorways and collisions with unsighted cyclists and pedestrians. Brigade’s Backeye®360 vehicle camera system can eliminate this, using cameras to provide a comprehensive ‘all-round’ image for the driver.

Sensors: A safer fleet will not only be equipped with cameras but sensors too. These will sound an alarm when trying to manoeuvre your way into a tight spot and the latest advances in technology ensure that these are more accurate and no longer a noise nuisance.

Analysis: Data is vital to ensure any business runs smoothly and that is true of the safe and efficient running of your fleet too. Compile as much information as possible on the efficiency of your fleet and use that to pinpoint improvements, spot poorly performing vehicles and spread good practice. Strategic management of your fleet will ensure it’s as safe and efficient as possible.

Routes: Your fleet needs to take the best route from A to B but the best route doesn’t always mean the fastest on paper. Plan to avoid traffic hotspots and build enough time into your schedule so speed isn’t an issue. It’s tempting for a driver to up their pace to meet a tight deadline but the quicker they go the more danger they’re in and the more fuel they’ll use. Ensure you pick up useful route tips from your drivers and build this knowledge into your analysis.

Research: Be on the front foot at all times to look out for the next technological advancements. Is it possible to transfer at least some of your fleet to a more efficient fuel, for example? Don’t wait until cost or danger forces you to invest in your fleet – prevention is far better than cure.

Training: Many businesses have regular training courses and refreshers for staff to improve their grasp of the software and materials they use but that’s not always the case with drivers. Don’t neglect this part of your workforce or the safety and efficiency of your fleet will suffer. Don’t just target people who have had an accident either – although address any errors swiftly and professionally – and keep all drivers in the loop about the data and technology at your disposal.
